Portable Generator Installation Design Checklist
· Place the generator exhaust away from any building HVAC air inlets. · Place the generator so that the discharge cooling air will not injure nearby pedestrians or equipment– make sure all cooling air inlets to the portable are clear. · Place the generator so that re-fueling is easily performed. · Place the generator so that it cannot be struck by vehicle traffic –use position, K-rails, or bollards. · Protect the power cable from sunlight damage and vandalism. · Confirm that the portable voltage is compatible with the building (i.e.: 3 phase 4 wire 277/480 vac, 3 phase 4 wire 120/208 vac, 1 phase 3 wire 120/240 vac, etc.) · Prior to transferring the load document the existing building voltage phase rotation– confirm the portable generator phase rotation is identical. · Confirm that portable generator is large enough to handle the existing building load. · If the selected portable generator is larger than the connected building load, ensure that the portable generator breaker trip rating has been decreased to match the building (and connected power cable ampacity). · Provide auxiliary power to the start battery charger and jacket water heaters to allow ready stand by operation. · Perform a test power transfer to confirm correct operation.
